How do I properly clean my leather furniture?

To care for leather furniture, vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment and wipe periodically with a soft cloth. Blot spills and mild stains immediately with a damp washcloth and mild soap, letting them air dry. To prevent fading and damage, keep leather out of direct sunlight and avoid contact with hair products or hand sanitizers.

How do I protect my dining table from scratches and spills?

Whether your dining table is wood or glass, a few simple habits will keep it looking its best.

For wood tables, use coasters, placemats, or trivets between the surface and any items—especially hot dishes, which are a leading cause of wood damage. Wipe up spills promptly with a dry, soft cloth, and treat sticky spots with a little water and mild soap, drying thoroughly afterward. Dust weekly in the direction of the grain, and keep the table out of strong sunlight to prevent fading.

For glass tables, dust with a soft, clean cloth and clean with a glass cleaner to avoid streaks. Use coasters, wipe up spills promptly, and be careful setting down sharp objects like keys to prevent scratches.

How do I clean and care for my upholstered furniture?

Regular care will extend the life and comfort of your fabric upholstery. While cleaning methods vary by fabric type, these tips will help keep your sofas, chairs, and sectionals looking like new:

Fluff your cushions and pillows. Redistribute the filling in loose cushions by kneading, or use the zipper on attached cushions. Feather and down-blend cushions need more frequent fluffing but bounce back easily.

Rotate and flip cushions periodically so they wear evenly.

Straighten seams and welts to keep your piece looking neat.

Avoid direct sunlight, which can dull and fade fabric over time.

Remove pilling with an inexpensive pill shaver or de-fuzzer. Pilling is normal and won't affect the fabric's quality or durability.

How do I measure my room for furniture?

Measuring your space before you shop helps ensure your new furniture fits comfortably. Here's how to get started:

  • Measure the room. Note the length and width, along with the ceiling height for taller pieces like bookcases or armoires.
  • Account for doorways, windows and walkways. Leave enough clearance to move comfortably—about 18 inches between a sofa and coffee table, and 30 to 36 inches for main walkways.
  • Mark it out. Use painter's tape on the floor to outline where each piece will go, giving you a real sense of scale and how the layout will feel.
  • Measure your entryways. Check the width of doors, hallways, staircases, and elevators along the delivery path to make sure your furniture can get into the room.

For personalized help, our design experts offer free in-home measurement as part of our Free Design Service.

What is distressed furniture?

Distressed furniture features intentional character marks created through a hand-finishing process that recreates the appearance of years of cherished use. Also known as patination, this process mimics what happens to furniture naturally over time, giving each piece a rustic, one-of-a-kind charm. The techniques vary from collection to collection and depend on the style of the furniture, and once the desired effect is achieved, the piece is stained to enhance the appearance and sealed so it lasts for years.

Common distressing techniques include:

  • Nicks: Hand-made impressions in the wood that reproduce years of dings and dents.
  • Rub-through: Using sandpaper or steel wool to gently rub away some of the topcoat on edges, carvings and other areas, enhancing the underlying grain.
  • Cow-tailing: Adding depth to the grain with a small brush with a very dark stain to put random short dark lines or curves on the surface.
  • Wormholes: Small holes are made to emulate these ravages of time using a tool tipped with a round metal ball.
  • Rasping: A shaping tool runs along the edges and corners to create a worn effect.

These marks are intentional and part of the furniture's designed character—not defects.
